Treating a Broken Bracket

Posted .

Broken brackets are very common, but that doesn’t make them more convenient. It’s very important that you take care of the broken bracket as soon as possible because if you don’t, your treatment time could be lengthened and your smile could be altered. With the investment you’re making in the orthodontic treatment and your smile, it’s best to do everything you can to stay on the right track. So, to help you do so, we recommend doing the following things:

No. 1: Check to see if your bracket is still attached to the wire. If it is still attached, you will need to keep the bracket in place by putting orthodontic wax all around it. If the bracket is no longer attached, it’s best to take the bracket out of your mouth and bring it into the office with you when you come in for your next appointment.

No. 2: Fix any loose wires. Sometimes the wires can become loose or they can fall out of place, which can make it very uncomfortable. If the wire is poking you, you can cut it with fingernail clippers. Make sure you cut as close to the base as possible. You can also try pushing the wire back into place with a Q-Tip or pencil eraser.

No. 3: Book an appointment. It is very important that you see your orthodontist as soon as possible so you can get the bracket fixed. If you don’t, it could damage your smile and lengthen your treatment time.
