To help you know more about orthodontics and your journey with braces, we are happy to provide the answers to the following treatment questions! We believe these questions will make your life easier as you transform your smile, and you will know all you need to as you go to school, work, and activities.
How long will my orthodontic treatment last?
The orthodontic treatment plan varies with each patient, depending on the condition of their smile. If you are one who has severe misalignments, it might take a bit longer for you to transform your smile. If you only have small, simple misalignments, your orthodontic treatment will be over before you know it. Generally, treatment can last 9 months to 5 years, but we usually see treatment that lasts 18-24 months. If you would like to know how long it will take for your specific smile to change, ask your orthodontist during your next appointment.
Is it possible to look cool with braces?
Yes, it is possible to look cool with braces. Nowadays, braces are common and they become cooler and cooler each day. Many people see braces as a “grill”-type appliance that covers the teeth in valuable jewels and treasures. Although your braces won’t technically include jewels and treasures, many people still consider them as so. You can also decorate your braces with colored bands. At our office, there are many colors to choose from, and you are more than welcome to style your appliance with as many colors as you would like.
Do braces hurt?
Braces do not necessarily cause pain, but they do cause soreness. After you come into our office for a tightening appointment, your teeth will feel sore and tender, which is completely normal. This means that your teeth are moving into their proper positions. This soreness won’t last longer than two days, and you can dull the soreness by taking over-the-counter pain medication. The braces may also cut your lips and cheeks, but orthodontic wax is used for these situations. If your brackets or wires are irritating your mouth, just put the wax over the section of the appliance that is bothering you.
Can I still play sports with braces?
Braces will not affect your game in any way, so yes; you can still play sports while you have braces. While you do so, we strongly recommend wearing a mouth guard. The guard will protect your lips, teeth, cheeks, and appliance from being damaged when hard, forceful objects hit them.
What am I allowed to eat while I proceed through treatment?
As you proceed through your treatment, it is important to stay away from the foods that can harm your braces. These foods include caramel, taffy, gummy bears, popcorn, gum, and hard candies. We also recommend that you remain cautious while eating hard foods, like bagels, hamburgers, apples, pears, and corn on the cob. It’s best to cut these foods into small pieces before you eat them.
